The Long Way Home: A Camera, a Drone, and a Little Fall Adventure

Sometimes the best photography adventures happen when you don’t really have a plan. Recently, I took a road trip to drop my son off at Ithaca College in upstate New York. Like any parent, it’s always a little bittersweet saying goodbye, but I decided to make the most of the drive home.

Of course, being a photographer, I couldn’t just get in the car and drive straight back to Connecticut. I brought along my camera and drone, knowing that somewhere along the way, something would catch my eye.

And I wasn’t dissapointed.

Fall in the Northeast is pretty spectacular. The rolling hills, winding roads, small towns, and changing colors make even an ordinary drive feel like an adventure. Every so often, I’d see something that made me want to pull over and grab my camera.

When I saw these windmills, I knew I had to get a bunch of images.

Having my drone with me added another dimension to the trip. There’s something incredible about seeing a landscape from above. Roads become winding ribbons through the trees, hills seem to stretch forever, and places you’ve driven past a hundred times suddenly look completely different.

Since my family is Dutch, I think there is an obvious attraction to windmills.

Photography doesn’t always have to be about an assignment, a client, or getting the perfect shot. Sometimes it’s simply about enjoying the experience of seeing something beautiful and wanting to capture it.

Driving back the light started getting crazy so I pulled over and shot this with my DJI Air 3.

What could have been just another long drive home turned into a wonderful afternoon of exploring, photographing, and appreciating the beauty of fall. So the next time you’re heading somewhere, throw your camera in the car. Take the scenic route. Pull over when something catches your eye.
