another new year!

We made it!! 2022 and here we are! I remain very optimistic for a very productive new year! In fact, I think as a photographer you really have to be excited by the new technology that is being introduced to the market. I am really enjoying my Canon 5ds which is a 50-megapixel camera with the nicest shutter you have ever heard. (well, almost…. I think the Leica m6 is the best ever…) I have many plans for personal projects this year and funny as it may seem, they include a lot of bike riding.

My hometown, Westport Ct photographed with the canon 5ds

walk the walk. In the summer there are so many people jumping off into the water.

surprise party at gray barns in silvermine

I was asked to photograph a surprise party at The Gray Barns in the silvermine area of Norwalk. I had photographed the chef here a few years ago for Westport Lifestyle Magazine, so I was very familiar with the restaurant. I actually took my prom date Laurie Hannah to The Silvermine Tavern back in 1982. that is what it was called back then. What a transition this restaurant has gone through. It is quite frankly, gorgeous!

This is the tavern area of the gray barn, it is perfect for small parties.
I call these my “martha stewart ” shots. These are all taken before the party.
pictures were taken of each guest.
then the images were printed and people would leave a message. Brilliant.
bokeh focus.
I love the ladder with its decorations.

mimick shoot

I got an inquiry to photograph a portrait for Alliance Bernstein. “We have an established style that we’re trying to replicate, specifically a full-body portrait, with examples below.”

I love challenges like this. I get these a few times each year and it makes sense. Why send the client to New York or Singapore or where ever when I can photograph them in my studio in Westport?.

Full length

Joan and I and the makeup artist Nancy Landauer were having so much fun that Joan decided she wanted headshots for her profile. So here we go.

Simple set up with one main light and one accent light with a reflector to bring out the eyes.

I use my Godox 200pro inside now. It replaced my speedotron set up because of the ease of setting them up. My main light is a godox octobox. The light is just perfect.

Now that is a professional headshot.

I really think the key to taking nice portraits is enjoying the person you are photographing and engaging them by listening to stories that we tell each other. A sense of trust is established and the rest falls into place really nicely. For your portrait appointment with me, just call 203-856-5075 and we can have some fun and take some great images.

Staples High School Hockey Photo Shoot

I was asked to photograph all of the players for the Staples Hockey Team. I love shooting portraits and photographing athletes in their gear is a lot of fun. Space can be an issue but we decided to pick a spot close to where the team was getting ready. Then we can shoot them as they go on the ice for practice. My setup does not take me long to set up and it takes very little space. I used one main light with a diffuser and a backlight to separate the background from the subject. I used a small grid for dispersing the light in the background to get just a little dramatic light.

A simple black backdrop was used with a light and grid for this shot.
I also wanted a shot to show the uniform.
we also shot a team photo.
The team practice is just over an hour-long so I stayed and took a few action shots.
I even snuck a little video of the end of practice conditioning.

Omicron causes my first postponement

It happened today. I got the email from the company that I was shooting this week for and they had to postpone the event. These are very tough decisions for them to make and I understand completely. As a small businessman, I rely on personal relationships with my customers who continue to use me time after time. The event was a two-day shoot with headshots, conference photography, and seminars. So instead of showing images of a building or headshots,I thought in honor of Thanksgiving, I would showcase some family portraits. Enjoy.

nothing like a rose garden to be your backdrop.
I love my Godox pro200 it gives me good light.
I love making people smile
Not just one family, but as many as we can.
7 grandkids hanging together. priceless.

My family portraits are a lot of fun and they only take about an hour to shoot. I then edit all of the images and upload them to a website. Once on the website, family and friends can share the images or purchase prints, cards, albums etc from the site. My lab delivers to your door and the quality is gorgeous.

who is that lurking in the woods?

Braden texted me a few weeks ago and told me he was going to ask his girlfriend to marry him and if I could capture it. It was just a matter of if I was available because I enjoy love stories. Plus, this was not my first time capturing a young couple proposing. The key for me is to look like a wandering person just in the background and then when he goes to one knee, to pop out and get the proposal.

Braden pinned the spot on google and I had no problem finding them.

My wife said, “why are you leaving so early when it only takes you 18 minutes to get there?” Because My biggest fear is not getting to the place on time and missing the big event. Braden sent me a video clip of him walking down to the water’s edge. Technology. I love it.

Braden proposes to Claire.
Claire said yes!!

high school portrait shoot at winslow park

These fall days are so wonderful to photograph. Not only the foliage, but the light, in general, is just so nice. Winslow Park AKA the dog park is one of my favorite “to go to ” spots in Westport. There are plenty of wonderful natural backgrounds to use in your portraits.

Mimi on location using an 85mm 1.8 lens open all of the way.

The lens I used on Mimi is one of my favorite portrait lenses. The 85mm 1.8 is very fast and produces nice bokeh. I also like to use it because I like to talk with the client and have them hear a little direction. With some longer lenses, you have to stand further away and you have to shout orders.

Mimi’s mom captures me in action.

I like to use my Godox 200 flash with my octobox. The Octobox gives me real nice flash fill that wraps around the face. It is easy to set up and only takes a few minutes to put together. I also use this box for my corporate headshots.

The flash strength is controlled from the camera so it is quick and easy for me to adjust to lighting conditions.
Winslow Park is a photographer’s paradise.

Westport’s Haunted House

Another halloween has come and gone but I had the opportunity to photograph a real haunted house. This was for Westport Lifestyle Magazine and the home is located off Compo Rd South.

Westport’s haunted house.

The shoot began with a bunch of crows circling the grounds and in the picture above you can see a crow on top of the fireplace. It was really creepy.

basement photo

I have known Bill Frawley for many years and he was the one who let me in the door. We did a walk through and I found it very easy to picture in my mind what I wanted to shoot.

I shot a few brackets of exposures so I could blend them in photoshop. The blending tool is my friend.

another “window pull” but I love the wallpaper in this

This house is truly a wonderful place to photograph. The library used it for years storing thousands of books. Now it is empty and I hope that someday the town would bring it back to its old self. Maybe the ghosts will just leave?

fall family portrait at longshore

I know all the secret places in Westport, this one has water, foliage, and all kinds of natural beauty. I enjoy these cool days and contrasty light, it is prime time for portraits. In-studio is fine, you can control all of the light. But when you get close to the water, it becomes a whole different shoot.

I have been enjoying my Godox 200 flash units, they give me enough power to match the sunlight and they are easy to use. I have a new set of gels that I will now start to experiment with. Can’t wait!

Drone photography for a wedding

When drones started coming out a few years back, I always wanted to get one. But, I had to wait. Wait for technology, because when they first came out, there were tons of flyaways and it was hard to control the drone. Fast forward to today and I have the latest technology at my fingertips and the drone is so much fun to fly.

I photographed the group image here with a DJI Mavic Air 2. I adore the size and capabilities of this drone and the images are phenomenal. The shoot was at the best place to be before halloween…… Sleepy Hollow New york, right on the Hudson river.
